Old-Fashioned Fudge
Rich, creamy, and perfectly sweet, this classic fudge recipe is a nostalgic treat made with simple ingredients. It’s perfect for holidays, gifting, or a special homemade indulgence.
Ingredients
2 cups granulated sugar
4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (preferably Hershey’s)
1 stick (½ cup) salted butter
1 (5-ounce) can Carnation evaporated milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ to 1 cup chopped nuts (optional)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Baking Dish
Grease a baking dish (approximately 8×8 inches) with butter or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.
2. Mix Dry Ingredients
In a medium saucepan, whisk together the sugar and cocoa powder until evenly combined.
3. Add Wet Ingredients
Add the stick of butter and the evaporated milk to the saucepan.
Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir gently until the butter melts and the mixture starts to boil.
4. Boil the Mixture
Once boiling, stir the mixture continuously for 7 minutes to ensure it doesn’t burn or stick to the pan.
5. Remove from Heat
Take the saucepan off the heat and quickly stir in the vanilla extract.
If adding nuts, fold them in now for extra texture and flavor.
6. Beat the Fudge
Stir the fudge mixture vigorously for about 3 minutes. This step helps it thicken and achieve the perfect creamy consistency.
7. Pour and Set
Pour the fudge into the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly.
Allow it to cool completely at room temperature or place it in the refrigerator to set.
8. Cut and Serve
Once set, cut the fudge into small squares. Serve and enjoy this timeless treat!
Tips for Success
Consistency: Stirring continuously is key to achieving the smooth texture of classic fudge.
Temperature: If you have a candy thermometer, the mixture should reach about 234°F–240°F (soft-ball stage) for perfect fudge.
Variations: Mix in mini marshmallows, crushed peppermint, or a swirl of peanut butter for a creative twist.
Storage
Room Temperature: Store in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
Refrigerator: Extend freshness by storing in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
Freezer: Wrap tightly and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature before serving.
This Old-Fashioned Fudge is a crowd-pleaser, perfect for sharing with family and friends or enjoying as a nostalgic treat for yourself!
